Customizing the Angelina: Inside the Slaughter Family’s Build

Build On Your Land, Custom Homes

We recently had the privilege of working with the Slaughter Family to build their beautiful new home in Gillespie County. The Angelina B’s design blends open gathering spaces with private retreats, creating a flexible foundation for both everyday living and future memories. Key features such as a welcoming foyer, open family room and kitchen, an island kitchen with walk-in pantry, a generous master suite, versatile rooms for bedrooms and a study, and a spacious back porch all helped create a home that’s both practical and inviting.

The Slaughter Family embraced this beloved layout and purposefully customized it to reflect their personal vision, including a reversal of the original floor plan that shifted key spaces from one side of the home to the other. Along with this structural adjustment, they added unique touches throughout their Angelina B while preserving everything that makes the plan such a perennial favorite. Let’s take a closer look at the special features they chose to make their home distinctly theirs.

Exterior Designed for a Strong First Impression

The Slaughter Family’s home makes a bold first impression with its dark, farmhouse-inspired exterior. The siding is painted in Sherwin-Williams SW7069 Iron Ore, a rich, dark hue that gives the home a modern yet timeless look. To add warmth and contrast, the porch beams and front columns are stained in Sherwin-Williams SW3522 Banyan Brown, creating a welcoming touch. The Texas Mix stonework, with its lighter tones, adds dimension and texture to the overall design. These thoughtful exterior choices create a dynamic and eye-catching curb appeal that compliments the scenic Texas Hill Country surroundings.

Expanded Kitchen and Dining Space

At the heart of the Angelina B, the alternate kitchen layout was chosen to include more counter space and expand the island. These changes also opened up the dining area, creating generous room for both meal preparation and gathering, bringing added versatility and comfort to daily living.

Drawing inspiration from their exterior, the family also brought in the Texas Mix stone, framing the stove and counter area with the same beautiful stonework featured on their porch columns. The light, natural tones of the stone and island cabinetry balance the deep Espresso finish of the surrounding cabinets, bringing warmth and contrast to the kitchen.

Smart Garage and Utility Reconfiguration

Every family uses their space differently, and the Slaughters recognized an opportunity to maximize their home's footprint. Rather than keeping the standard garage configuration, they utilized a portion of the two-car garage space to incorporate it into their indoor living area.

This clever structural change allowed them to completely reconfigure the utility room, drop zone, and pantry area. To make the space as efficient as possible for their daily routines, they added extensive pantry cabinet runs, including utility base cabinets and drawer stacks. This creates an incredible amount of concealed storage, keeping the main living areas clutter-free while providing a highly functional drop zone.

Open Spaces for Living and Hosting

The Slaughter Family’s home truly shines in its open concept family room, a welcoming, light-filled space designed for effortless gatherings and daily connection. The flow from foyer to family room, kitchen, and dining area invites everyone to be part of the conversation, whether hosting friends or spending a quiet evening together.

To enhance everyday comfort and make entertaining even easier, the Slaughters added a dedicated powder bath just off the foyer. With this addition, guests have easy access to a convenient restroom near the main gathering spaces, while secondary bathrooms remain private for the family, ensuring comfort and hospitality remain at the heart of their home.

An Elevated Master Suite Retreat

The Slaughter Family completely reimagined the master suite to create a true spa-like retreat within their home. To bring grandeur and architectural interest to the space, they incorporated a stunning cathedral ceiling in the master bedroom.

The master bathroom received exceptional upgrades that elevate the entire suite. They designed a beautiful tile wall that serves as the backdrop for a luxurious free-standing tub. To accommodate a massive walk-in shower, they combined the two separate his-and-hers closets from the standard plan. This newly expanded shower area is a true showstopper, featuring three separate shower heads for the ultimate relaxing experience.

Expansive Outdoor Living

Building in beautiful Gillespie County offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy sweeping Texas Hill Country views, and with that in mind, the Slaughter Family made significant enhancements to the rear porch.

They extended the rear cathedral ceiling porch out an additional five feet, creating a deep, shaded outdoor living room. Furthermore, they extended the porch outward on both sides so that it stretches all the way to the ends of the dining area and third bedroom. This massive covered space is perfect for enjoying warm Texas evenings, hosting outdoor dinners, and taking in the surrounding landscape.
