What to Expect During Your Site Evaluation

Build On Your Land, Construction Practices

The site evaluation meeting is a very exciting time in your home building process and the first time a Tilson representative steps foot on your land. During this meeting, there are a lot of different tasks being performed. So, what can you expect during your site evaluation?

Site Access and Land Preparation

The site evaluation meeting gives us a chance to determine what sort of preparation needs to be done on your land for construction to begin. This includes ensuring proper access for large vehicles, such as dump trucks and concrete trucks. Our Land Preparation Specialist will recommend the proper locations of a construction drive and culvert to ensure safe access to your land. They’ll also determine how the site needs to be prepped prior to pouring your foundation.

Determining the Slope of Your Land

By this point you should have a solid idea of where you'd like to build your new home. The Land Preparation Specialist will use a transit with a laser system to take grade shots of your land. This will allow us to determine the degree of which your land is out of level, so we can plan for your foundation and proper drainage from the home.

The Stakeout

Before leaving, the Land Preparation Specialist will actually drive stakes into the land to mark where the home will sit on your land. This lets the geotechnical engineers know exactly where to take soil samples to ensure your foundation is uniquely engineered for your land. They will also put stakes in where water, gas, and septic will be located.

What Can You Do Prior?

There are a few things you can do to maximize the benefits of this meeting. These include underbrushing your land, or at the very least mowing to a height at which the transit laser can send and receive information. It also helps if you have a good idea of where you’d like your home to be positioned ahead of the meeting.

The stakeout is an opportunity for you to ask questions as well. Take full advantage of the knowledge our Land Preparation Specialist and enjoy the process. It truly is an exciting time for you and your family.
