San Augustine County
San Augustine County has a very small population of about 7,800 and is densely forested by the Angelina and Sabine National Forests, which cover about 80% of the geographical area. The Mission Dolores State Historic Site is located here, offering hiking, history, and an archaeological site. Timber, poultry, and vegetable crops drive the economy. Downtown San Augustine hosts a sassafras festival each year, and Broaddus is a popular stop for tourists and residents alike on their way to Lake Sam Rayburn – the largest continuous lake in Texas, and one of the most popular recreational sites in the region.
