Frio County isn’t a cold place, as the name of Spanish origin would suggest; it was named after Frio River, which is in fact quite cool. This river is one of the county’s most popular places to camp, fish, and swim for the 19,600 residents. Several small-town communities like Hilltop, Moore, and Bigfoot dot the land, many of them situated on or near farmland. It’s the third-largest county in the state for vegetable and melon sales. Pearsall, the county’s largest city, was ranked as one of the 100 safest cities in Texas.
