Walker County contains a portion of the huge Sam Houston National Forest, with the Huntsville State Park just south of the city of Huntsville. The county has a population of 72,480, and almost two-thirds of it resides in this city. There, you can delve into history at a number of historical museums and buildings in its Cultural District, including the Texas Prison Museum. It also has a thriving art community with galleries, studios, workshops, and theaters. Walker County is only an hour north of Houston, a straight shot on Route 45.
