The Guerra Family’s Custom Canyon D Home

For over 90 years, we've worked with families to build homes that are a perfect fit for their land and lifestyle. We recently had the pleasure of working with the Guerra family, who needed a home that could comfortably accommodate multiple generations under one roof. They found their perfect starting point in our popular Canyon D floor plan, which is known for its spacious, open-concept design. While the standard plan offers a welcoming layout, the Guerra's made several modifications to transform it into a unique multi-generational home that fits their family's needs. Lets take a closer look at the clever customizations the Guerra family made to their home!

The Exterior Choices

The Guerra's made exceptional choices for their exterior finishes, perfectly complementing the interior of their home. By expanding both the front and rear porches, they created a grand entrance that enhances the home's overall curb appeal, and created large spaces for being outside and enjoying their Hill Country retreat.

Enhanced Kitchen and Living Spaces

During the design phase, the Guerra family chose our alternate kitchen plan, maximizing both function and flow. Their kitchen now features a large center island, oversized pantry, and all-drawer lower cabinets along the range wall, making meal prep and family gatherings even more enjoyable. To bring the warm, natural tones into their kitchen, they opted to add a rough-sawn beam above both sets of upper cabinets.

The family room is the heart of the home, and the Guerras knew they wanted it to feel that way. They added the box beams for warmth and extended the rear wall, providing more space to relax and connect. Additionally, Mr.Guerra had plans to add a built-in play nook for his Grandson. During the design phase, they opted to leave a cutout in the wall, which Mr. Guerra used to add a fun indoor play area in their family room.

The Dining Area + Drop Zone

To the left of the kitchen sits the dining area and the entrance to the drop zone/butler's pantry. This area is spacious and well-thought-out. The entrance to their drop zone creates separation between the main areas of the home and their added mother-in-law suite, while also allowing for a natural flow between the two.

Upgraded Master Suite

To bring warmth and architectural detail to their master suite, the Guerras decided to carry the rough-sawn beams into the master bedroom. The master bath is also fully equipped with a dual vanity, a large shower, and a very spacious walk-in closet.

Secondary Bedrooms & Bathroom

On the front side of the home, you will find the secondary bedrooms and bathroom. On this home, the bedroom 4 custom option was added to create an additional bedroom. This change relocated bathroom 2 and created a central shared space between the secondary bedrooms.

Tailoring the Home for Multi-Generational Living

Multi-generational living is a cherished tradition for many families. Sharing a home with parents or grandparents strengthens family bonds, provides built-in support, and creates a rich environment for shared memories. Yet, the key to successful multi-generational living lies in balancing closeness with privacy. The Guerra family understood this balance perfectly. They worked closely with our design team to modify the Canyon D plan, ensuring the final home would serve everyone’s needs without feeling crowded or disconnected.

Rather than building a detached guest house, the Guerra family chose to extend the home’s main structure, creating a solution that keeps their loved one under the same roof while still offering independence. This approach provides peace of mind and ease of care, while avoiding the isolation that can come with a separate dwelling. From the outside, the home maintains a cohesive and unified appearance, while inside it functions as two thoughtfully connected living spaces that balance privacy with togetherness.

The suite itself is designed as a true retreat, complete with a full kitchen and large pantry, a spacious living area, a comfortable bedroom with ample closet space, and a full bathroom featuring an accessible walk-in shower. Additional windows bring in natural light, enhancing the warm and welcoming atmosphere.  The suite's design elevates both functionality and everyday living!

  • In-Law Suite Access: A particularly thoughtful design feature is the suite’s access through the utility room, which was extended and paired with a butler’s pantry to create a seamless transition space, allowing for shared use of the utility room. An exterior door was also added, allowing for private entry and exit so the occupant can come and go independently while still remaining closely connected to the main home.

  • Kitchen & Pantry: A full kitchen, including appliances, an island with an eating bar, and a large pantry, was added to the Mother-in-Law suite for convenience.

  • Full Bathroom: The attached suite was equipped with a full bathroom that includes a walk-in shower and plenty of space for their loved ones to maneuver through the doorways.

  • In-Law Suite Bedroom & Closet: The Guerras added a very generous size room with a walk in closet for accessibility.
