The Crawford's Casita Retreat

When family comes to visit, you want them to feel right at home. Here at Tilson, we know that a true Texas home is built for gathering with loved ones, but as families grow and spread across the country, finding the space to host everyone comfortably can become a challenge.  The Crawford family found the perfect solution for their Tarrant County property: a beautiful, functional Casita. Instead of focusing solely on the floor plan, the Crawford's prioritized comfort, purpose, and connection. They designed a space that allows visitors to sleep and relax in peace, while preserving the main home as the central hub for shared family time and big family meals. Here is a closer look at how thoughtful design choices transformed their backyard into a welcoming retreat for generations to come.

The Heartwarming Story Behind "Tonkasita"

Every home we build has a story, and the Crawford’s Casita is no exception. Before you even step through the beautiful Texas star front door, you are greeted by a very special piece of family history. Resting right on the front porch, embedded permanently into the concrete foundation, is a single horseshoe.

This horseshoe belonged to a beloved horse named Tonka, who lived on the family’s property for 15 years. Tonka was a huge part of their lives. When given the traditional option to place handprints in the foundation, the family chose instead to pay tribute to their cherished friend. They lovingly named the new space "Tonkasita." Now, every time family members walk up to the porch, they are reminded of Tonka, setting a tone of warmth, love, and fond memories before they even open the door.

A Welcoming Retreat for the Whole Family

The primary goal of the "Tonkasita" was simple: make enough room for the family. With children and grandchildren living in different parts of the country, the Crawford's wanted a way for everyone to visit at the exact same time. By adding this Casita, they created a highly functional overflow space. The interior is perfectly broken up to balance privacy and togetherness, offering much more than just a place to sleep.

Maximizing Sleep Space

To accommodate as many as six to eight people comfortably, the family got creative with their sleeping arrangements. A spacious family sitting area features two guest beds, making it easy to host a small group right in the main room.

In the private bedroom, which feels as large as a master suite, they added a set of bunk beds. This is a massive hit with the grandchildren. Bunk beds make excellent use of the vertical space and turn a standard room into a multi-purpose sleep zone. By focusing on how many people the home could hold, the family ensured no one is ever left off the guest list.

Keeping the Main Home for Gathering

One of the most brilliant choices the Crawfords made was to rethink the traditional kitchen and opt for a simple kitchenette area for the guests staying there. Why? Because all the heavy cooking is up at the main house. The family wants everyone to gather in the main home for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The kitchenette out in the Casita is strictly for morning coffee, grabbing a cold drink, or storing simple snacks. This setup naturally encourages everyone to spend their days together, while giving guests a quiet, comfortable place to retreat when the day is done.

Working Remotely with Ease

Two members of the Crawford family work from home. In the past, trying to take Zoom meetings in the main house was a struggle, with excited children playing and dogs barking in the background.

To solve this, they built dedicated workspaces right into the Casita. With a desk in the main living area and a second desk tucked into the bedroom, adults can close the door and work in total peace. The family even set up a separate, high-speed Wi-Fi network specifically for the Casita. This ensures remote workers have a strong, reliable connection without interrupting the fun happening up at the main house.

Laundry Convenience for Guests

One of the extra touches in their Casita is its own set of washer and dryer hookups—completely separate from those in the main house. This addition means guests don’t have to worry about finding a convenient time to do laundry or carrying baskets across the yard. Whether staying for several days or just overnight, visitors can easily run a load of laundry during their stay or freshen up clothes for the road before heading home. For families, this small detail brings tremendous peace of mind and adds to the sense of comfort and independence the Casita provides.

Full Bathroom Comfort

A standout feature of the Crawford Casita is its full bathroom, designed with guests’ comfort in mind. With its spacious shower, crisp white countertop, and ample storage, visitors have everything they need to feel right at home. The ability to shower and freshen up without leaving the Casita is a detail guests appreciate—especially after a long trip or before a day of family fun. From the custom pebble shower floor to thoughtful touches in every corner, the bathroom is both practical and inviting, ensuring every guest enjoys a little everyday luxury, no matter how long their stay.

Building Your Own Family Legacy

The "Tonkasita" is a perfect example of what happens when you build with purpose. By focusing on functionality and their loved ones' unique needs, the Crawford family created a space where memories will be made for decades. They planned for the future, knowing their grandchildren would only continue to grow.
