From a Dream to Reality: The Ingrams' Custom Home Build in Hood County, Texas
Why the Ingrams Chose to Build on Family Land in Cresson
For the Ingrams, the decision to build wasn't just practical. It was personal. "This land was a family land, and my father-in-law gave us part of his land to build a house," Angela explained. Returning to Cresson meant returning to their roots, and building on that land gave them the chance to create something lasting for the next generation.
When their Fort Worth home sold sooner than expected, Jeff and Angela made a practical decision—they moved into a travel trailer right on the property while the build was underway. "We sold our house in Fort Worth and lived in our travel trailer," Angela said. "We put that money in the bank and saved it mainly to do other things with the house, to decorate, things like that, and then also to make changes."
That decision gave them more flexibility once it came time to customize their home, a choice that would pay off throughout the design process
How the Ingrams Discovered Tilson Homes
The Ingrams' introduction to Tilson Homes happened almost by chance. "We were camping and decided, here's one in McKinney," Angela recalled. "We stopped by and looked at it, and we liked the idea that you didn't have to have a construction loan. We liked the financing part of it. So we didn't look anywhere else."
That single visit set the tone for the rest of their build. Tilson's financing approach, along with the ability to customize an existing plan rather than start from scratch, gave the Ingrams the confidence to move forward without shopping around.
Touring Model Homes: The San Marcos Turning Point
Angela describes herself as someone who needs to "see it, touch it, feel it" before making a decision, so the couple visited Tilson model homes across Texas. Jeff said they took their time at every model home, walking through, sitting down, and studying the décor and layout again and again until they felt sure.
The McKinney model stood out early for its extra garage space and storage. But it was a stop in San Marcos that changed everything. "We walked in there, and I was like, oh, this is it. This is the house," Angela said. "I don't want a formal dining room. I want to be able to have everybody all in the same room. [The Palo Duro] has an office and a huge pantry."
Throughout the process, Tilson representative Katlyn played a key role in translating the Ingrams' ideas into workable customizations. "Katlyn helped us out a lot on being able to see things that we didn't think of," Angela said. "And she would say, ' How about this? And we're like, oh, didn't think of that."
A Modern Farmhouse Exterior Built for Texas Living
The Ingrams chose the Palo Duro C elevation for its classic modern farmhouse look, complete with a large front porch and matching back porch. "I wanted a modern farmhouse," Angela said. "That's what I got with this one."
The exterior features an Onyx Black roof paired with Pure White (SW 7005) siding, and Tricorn Black trim on the porch soffits and eaves for contrast. Rough-sawn beams and shutters add texture, while the pantry and utility room were extended outward to create a symmetrical elevation. The couple also extended their two-car garage to fit Jeff's full-size, one-ton truck, something he'd long wanted in a home.
A front door with clear glass panels lets in natural light, a feature Angela specifically wanted, given the Ingrams' rural setting. "We're in the country, don't have neighbors close by, and I can have a door with clear glass," she said.

Inside the Home: Open-Concept Living Designed for Family Time
Stepping inside, the Palo Duro C opens into a cathedral-ceiling family room with large windows and exposed beams. Luxury vinyl flooring in Copano Oak runs throughout the entire home, a deliberate choice after Angela's experience with dark floors in her previous house. "I had dark-colored floors in our old house, and I hated it because you saw every speck of dirt," she said. "This, you don't notice it."
Shaker-style trim and Eider White walls keep the interior bright, while the open layout connects the family room, dining area, and kitchen into one continuous space. That was intentional: the Ingrams never used the formal dining room in their old house, so they designed this home around one shared gathering space instead.

The Dream Kitchen and Pantry
Where family life truly comes together is the kitchen of the Palo Duro C, and the Ingrams chose Tilson's alternate kitchen layout to accommodate a double island. "I wanted a big kitchen," Angela said. "I'd always had a small kitchen, and I wanted something big and grand."
Summer Wheat island cabinets paired with Extra White (SW 7006) perimeter cabinets and black hardware create contrast throughout the space, complemented by Jasmine White quartz countertops. A pot filler sits above the cooktop, and a statement vent hood anchors the cooking area. Nearby, a custom coffee bar features floating shelves and bottom drawers, designed purely for display. "I wanted floating shelves," Angela said. "I just wanted it to decorate."
The pantry extends the kitchen's storage theme even further, with custom shelving, additional drawers, countertop space, and dedicated outlets for small appliances. "I didn't want them on the counter," Angela said. A window brings in natural light, fulfilling Angela's wish for a pantry far larger than the reach-in closet she'd had before.

The Master Suite and Spa-Like Wet Room
The master suite features a stepped ceiling with exposed beams, mirroring the model home design the Ingrams loved, along with luxury vinyl flooring instead of carpet.
The adjoining alternate master bathroom is built around a wet-room concept. The Ingrams personalized it with vertical tile instead of horizontal, a smaller window for added privacy, and built-in shelving in the niches. The shower floor features a herringbone mosaic in Matte Arctic White, contrasting with black plumbing fixtures throughout. "This is my favorite place," Angela said. In the primary closet, the Ingrams added extra drawers, a shelf, and an expanded layout so Jeff could have his own separate space.

Personalized Spaces for Every Family Member
Beyond the main living areas, the Ingrams tailored several rooms to fit their family's specific needs. Their daughter's bedroom was extended by a foot, and she designed its blue accent wall herself, a color that carries into her attached bathroom with navy cabinets and blue tile. The home's study, used daily by the couple, offers double windows and enough space for Angela to display her belongings.
The utility room, meanwhile, was extended to match the exterior elevation and includes a closet with a dedicated electrical outlet for appliances and vacuums, an idea suggested by Katlyn. The room also includes space for a refrigerator and a stand-up freezer, keeping both out of the garage.

Outdoor Living: Porches Built for Gathering
Outdoor space mattered just as much as indoor space to the Ingrams. The covered back porch features a cathedral ceiling that makes the space feel larger, with the same Tricorn Black soffit and eave treatment as the front porch for a cohesive look. "I wanted a place that we could go gather outside and spend time outside," Jeff said. "This was it."
The extended garage, meanwhile, gives the couple room for two full-size, one-ton trucks, a motorcycle, and extra storage, solving a problem Jeff had wanted to fix for years.
What the Ingrams Have to Say About Building With Tilson
Looking back on the process, Angela and Jeff describe their experience with Tilson Homes as one defined by ease, support, and genuine partnership. "When we want to do customization to the house on the plan, they would get out the ruler, and they say, 'this will work,'" Angela said. "It was way easy. I've never had that process be that easy before."
The impact of finally having the space they'd dreamed of is something Angela still feels every day. "I absolutely love it," she said. "It's amazing to have space, you know, because we come from a house half this size, and it's just amazing to have space, have places for everybody."
Jeff agreed, summing up the experience simply: "It makes me feel great."
Their recommendation has carried beyond their own home, too. "I would definitely recommend Tilson," Angela said. "It's very easy process. They walk you through it, answer all questions. They just made it amazing. It was an amazing experience." Family members have since reached out to Jeff and Angela for advice, and at least one has already signed on to build with Tilson.
